I have a childhood friend whose daughter is a color guard at Utah so my brother and I and my nephew, all BYU fans, went to the tailgate to watch them and the band ahead of the game. I only had my hat on. I got one long glare on the train, one F Provo, one guy looked right at me and told me to F off. Another guy talked to us for a few minutes and was quite pleasant and told us he expected us to win.
When we got to our seats in E32, we settled in. We were surrounded by Ute fans with pockets of other BYU fans a few rows in a direction.
The people around us were nice enough. The guy next to me told me ahead of time he would likely be swearing and I told him to do what he has to do.
They were loud the hole game. They congratulated us on the Marion TD. They were just normal fans most of the game, cursing their team at times and praising them at other times. The last two minutes had a lot of anger but once it was over, they all congratulated us and we went our separate ways.
There were a few other fans as we were standing and basking in the win that were annoying. One of them went on about how we should all get out of the stadium because it was no big deal to beat a 4-4 team. Another, about 60 year old, yelled F the Mormons. That one always intrigues me coming from an Utah fan.
All in all, it was a fun experience and confirmed that they have a relatively high percentage of yewtish fans though nowhere close to a majority.
