In 1992 Fred Whittingham became the DC for McBride. Since then Utah is 19-9 in
the rivalry game.

I had always understood that Fred wanted his old job as DC at BYU back after his stint in the NFL but Lavell didn’t want to fire Ken Schmidt. Fred took the job at the U out of spite and hired his son Kyle the next year.

It seems Fred pledged a blood oath to the old gods and the new in the Sept of Baelor to avenge his sacred honor which had been violated most foul by that evil House Edwards. And his son and heir then spent his life vindicating his father’s insult with success against BYU that is, at the very least, disproportional. Some would say unnatural.

Or something like that.

Do any old timers on here have some insight into Fred not getting the job? Any old buddies of Rondo or Lance or Lavell or Roger that know what actually happened back in 1992?
