I admit I was not excited about Kalanis contract extension…I did not feel he had earned it at the time.

I also think our records in 2020 and 2021 were largely the result of Covid. 2020 we played nobody (and even the teams we did play were significantly limited on practices compared to BYU). And our P12 south championship* was greatly benefited by those schools being extremely limited in practice and games the year before.

Kalani’s coaching staff, and his loyalty to those who were not good, really hurt the team.

I am not ready to say Kalani is one of the coaching greats, but I am loving what I am seeing this year. That includes the performance on the field and all of the intangibles and off-the-field performance. I was disappointed last year, but the team had some major challenges and even in the skid at the end, they were competitive against some very good teams.

If the team finishes this year strong and has a very good (at least in the race for the B12 championship) product next year then he will have won me over 100%.
