sacrifice for the gospel because I didn't have to attend early morning seminary. I cannot even count the number of times I was told by obnoxious out-of-state students that being from Utah meant that I didn't know what it was like to REALLY live the gospel.
I can think of at least two dates I went on where the guy lectured me about how Utah Mormons are not Christlike, and the evidence was because of they way everyone in Utah drives.
I don't know how many times I had someone just go off about how much they hated Utah, and didn't like "Utah Mormons."
I had two things I liked to say in response:
1. At least in Utah I learned enough manners to know that it's not okay to go to someone's home state and complain about it to them.
2. I doubt that you hate "Utah Mormons" you just don't feel special here like you did at home. When you were the only Mormon around you got a lot of attention for it, and it made you feel special. Now you're just one of the crowd, and you might find it a lot harder to live your religion here when the whole school isn't watching or caring what you do.
Predictably these responses did not make them any happier, but it did usually put an end to the whining.
I graduated in 2002.
