Or they do and he's done much better both in game planning and scheming
Speaking specifically of ARod, this offense isn't a top 50 offense, but it is a top 20 scoring offense. Statistically, this is still a bottom half of the country offense which I think would surprise a lot of people. But, they are taking advantage of short fields. It doesn't have top 20 talent so the output I would say isn't a pleasant surprise, I would say it is the surprise of the team. The things specifically that are clicking this year, but last 4 weeks specifically are largely in better prep and what looks like cohesive personell. I'd put some of this in a coach who came into this year fighting for his job and very much has coached with a fire that speaks to it, but here's a breakdown of how this went from one of the worst offenses to one that has done it's part and even carried a couple of times.

-Hiring a competent o-line coach. Losing maybe your 2 most talented O-line and improving your product 10x over means not all was well in that camp. Run game isn't perfect, but when both Jake has done well and the team is solid when LJ is healthy.
-Game planning- After the KSU game, BYU has come out both first of the game and after half with fantastic scripted game plans as both reading what they'd scouted and also making adjustments. The team has scored 1st drive TD's on over half their drives this year both 1st and 2nd half. This hasn't been the case the past couple of seasons
-Points per drive/play/yard- Where this offense has been very best. They are a top 20 team when it comes to points which means they are doing what they need to to win games off of short fields, TO's and scoring on short fields. Jake has added an element that fits Arod better than Kedon did and they aren't being careful with him like they did Jaron's last season. I'm sure Jake is pretty banged up. And while BYU still sits toward the very bottom of the FBS in 3rd downs, they have been better as the season has progressed and offset some of the misses on 3rds by being effective on 4ths. The blocking on really short yardage has been much better and we have had a number of great individual efforts to get 1st downs on plays that looked dead to rights. You can't really overstate how much players playing for the team and together makes a difference.

You could still look at the season numbers(not actually pointing to issues) or point to a few things in the first 3 or 4 games and complain, but the O has largely been on point the last 3 weeks to a point that I didn't think ARod was capable of. My only complaint from the coord over the last 4 games is the play call with Ropati throwing the ball and where that was called on the field, down and distance. Watching Detroit run somewhat of a similar play yesterday and running it perfectly, you see that Ropati not having a spot to throw it away was probably the biggest issue. If we run that from the 7 yard line, he can throw it out the back of the EZ without an issue when that side of the field was crowded with defenders.
