Ferrin saw he could run for it rather than take a risk with an incompletion
He had a first down in the bag. The touchdown might’ve been there, but if he had underthrown it or something, then it would’ve been a turnover on downs.

My best guess is that coaches told him run 1st/pass 2nd. And since the run was open, the kicker did the right thing.
