Weird (Mt Vernon especially). The people in the wards were mostly great, but the towns themselves were just tough places to be. Economically depressed and run down. I served in a few small towns in Missouri and enjoyed all of them. For some reason the towns in Missouri just had a different feel even though the had many of the same challenges as the towns in Illinois.
