As for picking a school & a level-of-play that are good for Michael to flourish in — yes, Rice was an excellent choice. Trying to have made it as a rush end at Utah State probably would've met similar disappointment. Athletically & size-wise, some very good HS players simply don't translate their games to upper D1 play. No reason to hate on BYU because of that, though.
