That’s what fans are missing about this defensive coaching staff. They are playing to win, not merely avoid losing.
Think of it. What happens if he botches the fumble recovery trying to make a scoop and score. What happens? We don’t get a turnover? Fine. But you haven’t lost anything in your game progression. Score is still the same and you’ve got your opponent on the ropes in this series. No change in win probability from where you were before the play started.
What if he scoops and scores? THAT outcome tilts the game in your favor and significantly changes the probability of winning.
So it’s a low risk move. If he botches it THIS coaching staff would not tell him ‘aww you shoulda just fallen on it!’ Because they look at the game differently.
That’s why Kalani’s first comment about J-Robinson’s tip was “we’ll ask him to take that one to the end zone next time.” And he said it with no sense of irony. He was making what he thought of as a legit coaching point.
IMO this coaching staff is changing the way defense is played. Fans and the media have yet to catch up.
