Take the square root of each element individually.
square root of -1 = i (by definition)
square root of 36 = 6
square root of -36 = 6i
square root of 49 = 7
square root of x^3 = x^3/2
square root of y^8 = y^4
square root of 49x^3y^8 = 7x^3/2y^4
