As said above, there is no base path until a tag attempt is made. When a tag is
attempted, the path is defined as a straight line between the runner and the bag. If the runner then leaves that path trying to avoid the tag, then he’s out.

On that play, there never was a tag attempt, so no path was ever defined and the runner can take whatever route he wants from first to second.
