Sounds like we aren’t as good as we need to be.
Hopefully that can get fixed. I’m dating myself here, but I can’t imagine Ty Detmer/Norm Chow going to the mic after an entire half of disappointing offense and saying “Well, all
of a sudden, they blitzed us….” Detmer simply would’ve scorched them for trying it, and it would’ve been the other coordinator trying to explain what just happened. That’s true for a lot of our past offenses.
I am not down on Jake Retzlaff—he’s getting better. But at this point, it’s a given that his tendencies are known to our opponents, and we’re going to get a steady diet of what bothers him.
Another given: Utah will man up our receivers and grab and hold at every opportunity while coming after Jake. If we don’t have an answer by then, we’ll have likely dropped two or three of the games prior, and it won’t be pretty in SLC.
We’ll have had two weeks to work on this stuff and continue Jake’s progress. It’ll be interesting to see what happens on Saturday against Arizona.
