Might be lightweight for you and it is fantasy, but I really love the Belgariad
series by David Eddings.
Belgariad - 5 books
Malloreon - 5 books
Belgarath/Polgara - 2 books
Last two are the best, but you really need to read the first 10 to enjoy them.
I usually explain they are between Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings in easibility to read and complexity of story.
