at this point people are using past seasons or pre season expectations as part of their consideration—whether consciously or not. So they feel like it’s too early in the season to feel confident that BYU is for real and the bottom won’t fall out in October like it did last year. But that’s not an objective take on THIS season, yet it has always been considered a fine way to determining a champion.
