When you ostracize people that would otherwise have a vested interest in watching CFB generally by locking out their schools, they don't all of the sudden become fans of your teams, they leave the sport and turn their attention to the NFL. CFB is so successful because there are 130 schools involved at the FBS level. Your games lose importance if 90 of those schools no longer have a reason to watch your games.
