It was in Provo and the Cougars were pummeling the Utes. Lavell pulled starting QB Mark Wilson in the 4th Quarter. Someone brought it to LaVell’s attention that Wilson was only a few passing yards away from setting an NCAA record for passing yards. (It was the last game of the year) He put Wilson back in for one play. Wilson not only got the yards, but threw for a TD pass.
The Ute coach was furious and never forgave LaVell. Edwards seemed to be more careful not to antagonize other coaches in similar situations after that incident.
It was Ute Coach Mark Howard in 1977. Basically pulled a Max Hall, but saying he hated BYU.
