It's because if Utah hasn't won 11 games, they've lost to teams well outside the
playoff discussion.
The only two teams on Utah's remaining schedule that are ranked are #18 Iowa St and #22 BYU. If they lose to one of those, they're still in discussion. If they lose to both, they're likely not in the discussion, or they've lost to an unranked team which could also knock them out of the discussion.
