"Yes, we are going to enforce the rushing the field penalty on Utah" confirmed Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark to the room of reporters earlier this morning. "The rule is in place for safety reasons. It is the responsibility of the hosting school to have the safety measures in place. It does not matter what the final score is, or which school's fans rush the field. What matters is that the hosting venue is equipped to handle the safety of all participants."

Per the conference bylaws, the penalty is to be paid to the visiting school. Which adds insult to injury, as it was the fans of the visiting BYU Cougars who rushed the field following a 27-0 victory that saw BYU improve to 9-0, and effectively eliminated Utah (6-3) from playoff consideration.

The Big 12 has indicated that they are considering altering the bylaws to account for the eventually that visiting fans are the ones to rush the field in future contests. BYU has also indicated that they will donate the $100,000 penalty to assist their church's humanitarian efforts.
