I pulled the rug out from under my kids and had to take a job out of state. My kids are pretty upset, especially my teenage boys. I am heading out to the new job early and was supposed to leave a few days ago but thought it would be fun to take my boys to the BYU game, to spend a couple hours with them and hopefully create some memories. I’ve been to some amazing BYU football games in my life, but unfortunately, since we’ve been living out of state for the past 8 years, and just recently moved back to Utah a year ago, my boys haven’t been able to experience those.
Until last night, it was incredible. The atmosphere, the game, the noise, everything was amazing. And even more awesome was to see my boys get into it and have so much fun, even my son, who is not very big into sports, was having the time of his life. I think they are fans for life now. We ended the night driving home, listening to Greg Wrubell, and talking about the game, which is what I used to do with my dad growing up. When we got home, each of them both said thanks dad and told me they loved me, a couple things I haven’t heard for a few months.
So thank you BYU football, for helping my boys forget their anger at me, even if it’s just for a couple hours, and for helping me make some memories with them. Now I get to drive all day on 5 hours of sleep, but it was totally worth it!
