After getting methodically pushed all the way down the field, all the while barely putting the K-state O in any duress, we somehow hold on 3rd down, and the K-state field goal team mercifully takes the field. We're all elated to see them kicking because we'll certainly take being down 1 score in a game in which it feels like we're slowly, deliberately being ground down. Their QB and RB look like they can pop a huge play at any moment. Being within just 1 score is the best thing we can hope for at this point.

And as they line up to kick the FG on one end, the Cougarettes inexplicably run on to the field on the other end, waving enthustically to the crowd as they park themselves 20-30 yards on to the field while the opposition, who has been pushing us around all night, is set to kick a field goal on the other end of the field. I'm on the Cougarette end of the field and people everywhere are frantically waving at them to get off. For what seems like forever but was probably just a handful of seconds at most, they're totally oblivious. They sit there, way on to the field of play, and keep smiling and waving.

Now I don't know the actual rule, but we're all terrified of a penalty because basically anything called on us would give K-State the first down on our 5 yardline or closer. Eventually, the Cougarettes get the message and leave, albeit not quickly enough for any of the panicked fans around (and including) us. The field goal is kicked without incident.

I had a friend join us who has moved here for his job but is from Baton Rouge, and I tell him that the Cougarettes routinely win national titles, and this might be the only time they are booed in our stadium.

Thankfully, it all worked out.
