Maybe you give the backup one drive and if he doesn't have any more success you go right back to the starter - but in general in think it's a huge risk to take out the starter. You better make sure the backup does better or get the starter back out there after one drive.

You could see the kid was second guessing himself.

Caveat - I missed the last 8 minutes or so. Maybe he came roaring back. In any case I still think it's generally too big of a risk to take.
