Because catching the ball is priority number 1. Setting up too far back results
In short punts landing. I'll give two examples of why this is a problem.

1. SMU had a turnover because the return man couldn't get to the short kick. Bounced off his guy and we got a turnover.

2. Wyo game right before the half, Parker wasn't up far enough and it bounced and we lost 10 seconds on the clock negating any chance at getting 3 more points on the board.


You can prioritize different things on the return. But prioritizing catching the ball every time is a valid goal. You have to set up closer if this is your goal.
