Tucson, for all its faults, actually has surprisingly good restaurants
The thing about Mexican in Tucson is that if it’s been there a while, it is going to be good.

El Guero Canelo is probably my favorite Mexican place. During the day all the locations are fine, but I’d stick to the north location at night. Sonoran dogs are the local thing to try there. It's a loaded hotdog.

Seis Kitchen is a really good place.

El Charro is a mini chain. It’s really good if you’re not used to good Mexican, but I just found it ok. They supposedly invented the chimichanga.

Tucson tamale company is the only place I’ve ever had a tamale I liked. They also have the best green salsa I’ve ever had.

One of my favorite non-Mexican restaurants is Wildflower. A little nicer, but not really high end.

Zinburger is a good nicer burger joint. I really love their zucchini fries.

Culinary dropout is a modern gastropub. Again, good solid food. The pretzel bites there are great.

Beyond bread is a good casual sandwich shop. My kids and I really like the Mac and cheese there.

For dessert, try Frost gelato. Their Gianduia is a great flavor.

There’s plenty of others, but that’s my top list of places I think about when going out to eat in Tucson

Also, Tucson is the slowest city in the country to get across. Takes forever. Check Google maps when deciding where to go.
