My system would be simple. You get 4 games, if you're not over 120 QB rating, you're benched. And if you ever go
under(in terms of season avg)at any point from there on, you get benched. And you're considered done for the year basically at the point. And the next guy gets 4 games to show his stuff. That way if you do have poor QB play, at least you can see 2 or 3 guys over a healthy sample size each year....regardless if you are winning or not.
The only exception would be if you are an exceptional runner ala Taysom because he did go under that mark every year pretty much....and he was a frustrating QB at times....but obviously the running was the key.
Every year is its own thing though. I just think it's wrong to pretend Retlaff '23 is the same as this year. There's nothing so far that says that. Friday wasn't good but if that's his floor this year.....he's much improved. And it will be worth a few more wins this year. Doesn't mean he should start for the next year and a half, but if he doesn't trend into the below 120 range, BYU should be alright.
This pretty much would've handled every BYU situation like it should have been. Mangum would have been benched before that Washington game disaster, Heaps/Nelson platoon wouldn't have gone as long as it did, etc.
