I had some conflicts last night and so we had to start the game late night (which was great - we got some pizza and watched with my kids and had a lot of fun). But about midway through the first quarter (as the game was ending in real time) I got a text with several angry/mad faced emoji's and assumed BYU lost in heartbreakingly stupid fashion. I watched the rest of the game anticipating that kind of result even during the kneel-down portion. So these are my thoughts from the perspective of watching the game trying to see where BYU screwed up...
- I was stunned at how much of the offense went through the RB's even though BYU was playing 3rd & 4th string guys.
- It seemed that our offensive weapons were supposed to be the receivers but there were many series were the entire WR group didn't even get an opportunity.
- The look that Chase Roberts gave Retzlaff after the wide receiver screen in the dirt - yikes!
- The defense was absolutely amazing against what I expected to be a good offense.
- The difference between QB1 and QB2 for SMU was fascinating. I'm no football expert but it was so interesting to see BYU continually destroy QB1 and QB2 always just getting away.
- Retzlaff is going to get hurt as a running QB.
In the end it was great to get the win but this team seems to be exactly what I feared going into the season - massively improved defense with serious holes and issues on offense (RB depth, QB, etc). At this point I see BYU moving up to five wins but you just can't win in the Big 12 without a RB or QB.
