Big name actors are not always good at reading audio books for some of the reasons you mentioned. I made the mistake of listening to Slaughterhouse Five read by James Franco. It was monotone, halting, and tired-sounding. A lot of pro readers do a good job of reading in a more engaging way and having a good variety of voices. I don't mind having all the characters read by the same narrator when they are good at it.
