What are some great or terrible remakes?
Here's one I greatly dislike: Johnny Lingo. (Spoiler warning, in case anyone is still living in the 60's) Why? Because they completely ruined the end. I appreciate that they added some backstory, but I feel like the end was way too different and incredibly underwhelming. In both versions, Mahana is seen as worth very little. In the leadup to the dowry bargain for Mahana, rumor was that Johnny would be able to get her for practically nothing.

In the original, cows were often used for the dowry, with most being between 3 and 5 cows or so if I recall correctly (I admit, it has been a while since I've seen the movies). People speculate that Mahana's dad (who is notorious for his low valuation of Mahana) will be lucky to get even a single cow for her, and if he asks for 1 cow Johnny will bargain down to much less. However, he asks for 3 cows, which although is higher than they were privately thinking she'd be worth, is considered to be on the lower end nonetheless. There is some laughter at the "high ask", but Johnny pauses and delivers the very effective "I will pay 8 cows" line to an amazed crowd.

In the remake, however, even one cow was an almost unheard of, and only recently became a thing. Mahana's dad, for reasons not adequately explained, asked for two whole cows, which was the most that had ever been asked in all the land (or rather, the islands). The crowd reaction is much more disruptive than in the original; people are enraged and Mahana storms out. Among the commotion Johnny shouts "I will pay 8 cows", but the delivery is much less effective because of all the commotion going on.

While I get that they wanted to make the 8 cow offer even more over-the-top, I feel they went overboard. Also, Mahana's father asking for 2 cows (when 1 cow was almost unheard of) doesn't make sense; he spent the whole movie disparaging her, and although he came to realize that she had cared for him in his sickness, suddenly asking for the highest bride price in all the islands seems to be an over-the-top reaction. They should have kept the bride prices and bargaining scenario similar to the original, and I would have liked it more.

Rant over.
