…we heard complaints a few yrs back from Kolby Lee about big man development when Burgess was coaching them under Pope. Said that coaches only wanted our bigs doing “Big Shoulder” which is what we see Fouss still doing today, turn and drop a couple of shoulders into your defender’s chest then go up with a hook.
Contrast those offensive moves taught to our bigs under Burgess with what we saw from BYU bigs in years past with guys like Brandon Davies, Eric Mika, Kyle Davis, and Noah Hartsock. Hartsock had a killer mid-range turnaround J, Mika had a great face-up game and good range out to 20 ft, same with Kyle Davis. Davies was very crafty in the post with great footwork and used an array of moves to get a shot but could also step out and hit from the mid-range.
For Richie, he can be a good scorer without being a good creator but I agree he needs to continue to develop the ability to score in iso situations, whether off the dribble or by adding a post up game. He has the tough-guy mentality with nice quickness and a craftiness that would do well in the post if he gets a smaller guard switched onto him. A big success factor in scoring in the post is mental, believing that you’re tougher than the guy defending you and you can totally own him in the paint. Richie could be really good there if he adds that to his game. RayJ Dennis (PG from Baylor) abused bigger players in the low-post when they ran iso plays with him getting the ball in the low-post because he was mentally tough and slippery (great footwork and a crafty set of moves)
