In the good old days, there were far more than now who played football.

Look at all the programs that dropped football. In CA alone, Long Beach State, Cal State Fullerton, Santa Clara, UoP, Cal State Northridge, UCSD, UCSB, USF, St. Mary's, Pepperdine, UC Riverside. BYU used to play UOP and Long Beach State regularly. Others that BYU used to play: Denver, Wichita State, George Washington.

US Population 1980- 223M, in 2024- 341M an increase of 53% so in theory 53 FBS
