But they had 5 kids with more coming at my age. Owned a home they were completely remodeling. They were never wealthy by any stretch. My childhood was hand me downs and home cooked meals. Eating out wasn't even a rare treat it simply didnt happen.

Despite that I dont see how I could afford the family size they had with a comparable home. First child is now loading and convincing my wife to retire is a challenge. We will have plenty of income but living on just my salary means a 1500 sq foot home vs a 2500 sq ft home like my parents had despite living in a much cheaper market than my parents home is in.
