Almost that simple. Housing size has increased, but that is partially due to
supply. The smaller houses either
A.) don't exist
B.) aren't available for purchase
C.) Are in less-than-desirable geographic locations

If I want a safe environment for my kids, with a decent school, I kinda have to go further out in the suburbs where only larger houses exist.

But I do agree the larger household income due to dual incomes and people generally also wanting bigger homes is indeed a factor, its just not exclusively that.
