I’ll allow that the QB’s on the roster don’t inspire a lot of confidence but I’ve been trying to stay positive this offseason. But there are a few things that give me hope that the position group may turn out ok.
1. BYU is the only team in the league who has a quarterback who has won a Big 12 championship. Granted, it was before a demotion and an injury, but Bohanon was a very capable starter for Baylor.
2. The top 4 quarterbacks (Bohanan, Retzlaff, Bourquet and Hillstead) all have experience starting at the D-1 level. It shouldn’t take them very long if at all to acclimate to the speed of D-1 football. Each has had their highs and lows and so each needs to be a little more consistent.
3. All of the top 4 quarterbacks can run. Coaches say that dual threat quarterbacks are difficult to prepare for. Plus, if all 4 can run, it seems like the coaches don’t need to alter game plans to a significant degree for a specific quarterback. One game plan should suit all of them.
4. Based upon film and reports, all of the top 4 have decent arm talent.
Whether or not those attributes translate to success is anybody’s guess. Hopefully one of them can put them all together and add a few other things like consistency, leadership and game management. But in these dog days, I look for reasons to hope.
