response about using a go-between company (Expedia, Orbitz, etc.), I too had a reservation with Hampton Inn through such a company and hotel attempted to tell me that I didn't' have a reservation. Then they were stupid enough to charge my card, because yes I actually did and they were attempting to not have to pay for me a room elsewhere as they have oversold. The manager wouldn't do anything either and neither did go-between company. My ONLY relief was challenging the charge on my card. Apparently, neither service had the cajones to attempt to block my challenge.
