My dad had a “no chains” rule unless we were driving to a destination.
I have instilled the same rule when we travel.
I just look at yelp or google reviews after I ask Siri “what’s good to eat around here.”

When you've traveled to a part of the US you're not familiar with how do you decide where to eat?

Never chains if at all possible. Google reviews, Reddit, and/or Perplexity

A good hotel concierge usually knows of good places to eat.

Google, Trip Adviser, DDD, and CB. But usually Google because it's easiest.

Chains? Ugh. I ask locals or BYU students who have lived there.

Yelp is terrible. Don’t support them. They suppress good reviews and then charge

A lot of major cities will have a sub Reddit dedicated to food in that city.
