Literally nearly half the players from D1 schools entered the transfer portal
in the last couple months. BYU is not unique in having many of their players enter the transfer portal. They are just like nearly every other school in D1. I have seen multiple references to over 2,000 players from D1 schools in the transfer portal, including the 1 below. There are just over 360 D1 teams. That is about 6 players per team. BYU has been lower in transfers than the average most years. With a coaching change this year the BYU transfer total was higher than I think it will be compared to the average.

BYU brought back players that entered the portal, so good players are coming back. I also saw that a little over 100 players returned to their original teams, so BYU was better at retaining players that tried the portal and/ or BYU is also more willing or has more need to bring back their own players that try the portal.

In a new world where teams are seldom filled with returning production, hope KYoung is the right man to lead BYU to high levels of long-term success.
