This is very bad form.
Many restaurants in Utah are set up so you go in, order your food and as you pay, you are then hit up for a tip. They don't give you any service, don't visit your table and refill your drinks, don't check in to make sure everything is going well and bring you anything you need. Instead, I get up and fill my own drink, I go to ask for anything I need, extra utensils, etc, I go up to order anything additional and to ask for a take home box.
Exactly what are these restaurants wanting me to tip for? So their employees will be nice and treat me with kindness and respect when taking my order?
Dude, you took my order. Don't ask for a tip!
I have started the practice of selecting "0" for a tip. Unless, someone really goes above and beyond. I've worked in restaurants before and I will tip heavily for great service.
But there should be no pandering for a tip, for just taking an order.
Utah restaurants need to stop this pathetic "give me a handout" practice.
End of rant
