This. Clothes were also much more expensive back then in terms of purchasing
power. Sure, pants may have only costs $1 or something like that, but if you are making .15 an hour that is basically a days labor. If you had 5 kids, it could take you an entire week just to earn enough to put pants on each member of your family. Today you can buy a pair of pants at Walmart for $15 bucks which is an hours' work for even the low wage earners. So while the actual cost is higher today, they are very much cheaper. This is a big reason why people couldn't afford many clothes. And why it made sense to fix and reuse clothes rather than just buying new ones like we do today. So you bought one suit like the ones you see here and wore it basically every single time you went to town.
