Anyone who flies much or has any need to keep a schedule selects no layovers.
In the summer, 70 miles is nothing (I might pick differently in the winter with snow possibility).
Anyone who has flown much through O'Hare avoids it like the plague.

Even flying to Japan we only had one layover. I would never do 2 layovers.

Probably option 1, option 2 makes it easier to take an Uber to/from the airport

Both airports are very easy to use. Airport in Option 1 is a little bigger, but these aren't your JFKs, ORDs, LAXs, ATLs
