D2D is great for kids
Good skills doing something uncomfortable. Vast majority of people aren't going to be mean to a bunch of kids asking to do some extra chores for a few bucks.

Some ideas:
1.) Go to Costco and bulk buy some candy. Have the kids sell it with a decent margin.
2.) Ask to pull weeds / mow lawn
3.) Buy a pressure washer. Teach kids how to set it up and use it. Kid asks for 5-10$ to wash down a car, driveway, porch, etc. PW may not be needed for car washing if they bring their own soap
4.) Get some number stencils and spray paint. Kids ask if they can touch-up their curb address. Can also work with smaller stencils and mailboxes

Also read a story about a kid that went D2D to neighbors offering a 1$ a week trash service. Night before trash day he would come and bring out your trashcan, and next afternoon he would bring it back and stow it away. Kid ended up making a few hundred during the summer and many of the neighbors asked if he would continue the service during the school year, as they got used to it.
