YR ATT AVE
2021= 1775 Juddy's best team that underperformed at tournament. Record=19-6. WCC
2022= 1826 Amber Whiting's first year. Record 16-17. Ten players transferred, graduated or decided not to continue w/BYU (mental health). WCC
2023= 2080 Record=16-17. First yr in Big 12. Before the season 9 players graduated (1), transferred (4), went on missions or decided not to continue.
I like facts. BYU was not getting top-tier players every year. We were lucky to get Erin Thorn, Jennifer Hamson, or Shaylee Gonzales to come. Most players get developed. Hard work is what differentiated Lauren Gustin from others. I looked at why Amanda Barcello transferred. Outstanding recruit coming in which didn't pan out, but this had nothing to do with the coach. Last yr, biggie Alyssa Blanck transferred to UU where she played 8 games, averaged .6 pts and .5 rebounds. Evidently, she was better/worse than what was on our roster.
Some are complaining abt Matavao and Bubakar who are in the portal, but you notice, they are still in the portal. I don't know what their story is. Could be playing time or interactions w/coaching staff. Considering she is one of Amari's friends, who knows? Perhaps Bubakar wanted to spend her last season closer to family. Some are dinging Coach Whiting b/c Falatea quit. That's on Falatea. Give her some of the responsibility. The fact that she just transferred to Oregon when her boyfriend/fiancée was just drafted to KC is interesting all by itself. We'll see how much she devotes to her craft. Who knows?
I think we are 2-3 yrs away from what is desired. Can you imagine Gibb, Woolston, Whiting and at least one big? I mean that is going to be awesome to watch. Look what Iowa did? They have kept their players, their plan and their culture alive. They got to two finals with Caitlin Clark shooting/passing lights out and they did it mostly with average players. If Amber can keep her core and develop her players, I see good things. Gonzaga has done that. They went to the sweet sixteen.
Now look those teams that made the Elite 8 and tell me how many McDonald's All-Americans they have. LSU, SC, UConn, USC, UCLA, Stanford, Iowa and Texas come to mind. South Carolina's roster is filled with high school All-Americans. Iowa had one, Caitlin Clark.
Look at what one player can do and the changes that athlete can make on a team. BYU is off on the right foot. Gibb is rated 34 in one and 77 in another, Whiting was 31 and Woolston was 127th. UConn has 4 top 50 recruits for next year.
I'm done. I just think we are getting better. Look at the competition, conference, scores and not so much at the record. Just sayin'.
Regarding attendance. It's gone up every year and that is with an imperfect record. Just sayin'.
