Essays should be as crucial to the admissions process as diagramming sentences should be to earning a HS degree.
The BoT views BYU as a mechanism for training young adults who will take the intellectual knowledge and skills learned into the world in a way that reflects the mission of BYU and the church.
Essays have precious little to do with that. I spent 5 years on an adcom for one of the top graduate doctoral programs in my field. Personal statements and essays carried virtually no weight because they were the most easily embellished and falsified component of an application.

It’s really not. Too many kids are going to BYU in spite of what it stands for and not because of it.

Letter of Rec may speak to how aptly an applicant fits at BYU's mission. Essays don't. At all. Anyone can say whatever

This would be a good data point, except seminary teachers are so inconsistent. Some are all in on the rec, some couldn't
