There is an urban legend of President McKay eating rum cake.
When asked he said the WoW says not to drink alcohol but nothing about eating alcohol.

My wife made some homemade vanilla. Apparently it is just two ingredients. Vodka and vanilla beans.

I make gallons of vanilla a year. I’ve never made something that burned when using homemade vanilla.

Is adding vodka to things a technicality?

Urban legend or no, eating rum cake is just fine in my humble opinion.

To make vanilla that’s real you have to use vodka

What did we do wrong? I am sure it isn’t supposed to be that strong. We didn’t even finish the ice cream.

Was it supposed to be flambe? That concentrates the flavor and burns off some alcohol

Could have been a few things. Poor beans. Not enough beans. Didn’t let them age long enough. Didn’t shake them often.

To add, I usually do double fold and age at least 18 months. Shake at least weekly the first 6 months and then monthly.

Hmm. We only shook on the first day. Put them on the shelf in a cupboard and left them for about 5 months. Just used it

5 months vs 18 months might also be a factor....

Yeah, although Husker said 2 months is sufficient.

As long as the beans are fully exposed and you shake them often.

That's what we do. We just buy Mexican vanilla. It's great.

Rum makes a different vanilla. It’s great for certain things. Vodka is the more neutral flavor that most associate
