BYU makes 36% of its 3s--about 1.08 pts. per 3 and that includes contested 3s, clock running out 3s, bad shots, etc. That percent would go up a fair amount with an open 3.

If the choice is a contested layup when there is no need because there is plenty of time on the shot clock or look for a better open shot, I think it is probably better to go for the open shot.
