I love the mountains and canyons of SLC. I'd spend a lot of time up there hiking, biking, or just relaxing.
One of my favorite things was to go up to guardsman's pass at night to sky gaze. I'd do it with friends or alone and never had a problem.
I was dating my wife and thought guardsman would be nice evening, so we drove up there one night.
I had a sun roof that we opened and star gazed. We were alone. We talked for awhile and some headlights came from behind, but were not too close to us then they turned off.
We had just started to make out a bit when my wife caught her breath and pointed. I looked out my window and this dude was standing and staring at us about ten feet from my window.
I stared back at him and he didn't move or flinch. He had a long, red, and scraggly beard. Was wearing a white T-shirt and green camo pants. It looked like he may have been hiding something, but I couldn't tell.
I grabbed my keys and turned on the ignition. I looked back and the guy was gone. Like one second he's there, next second there's no trace of him. I turned off the car and we talked about whether we should leave or not. Suddenly, this white van, with no windows in back was right next to us. We didn't hear it until we saw it next to us.
I turned the car on again. The van drive ahead and I thought that they were leaving and thought about staying up there. Just as I was going to turn the car off, the van went into reverse and floored it. I put my car in gear and floored it as well. I squeezed passed the van and van followed us.
I took those corners faster than I ever had before and the van was too. We came around a corner and the van was gone. My wife was watching behind us and it was just gone.
I continued to drive as fast as I could all the way to my parents' house. My wife and I parked, ran inside, and turned on the TV to calm down.
When we turned on the TV one of those unsolved mysteries programs was on. The story it was highlighting was about this couple who were parked in the mountains in Colorado. Two men pulled the girl out of the car and she disappeared. The man was beaten when he got out to stop them, but was alive. The suspects were driving a white van, had a red beard, and were wearing camo gear.
I don't know what to make of this experience at all. But it was and still is the most freaked out I've ever been.
