I just watched a show about this. The B-26s were assigned to Utah beach and

they flew below the clouds and absolutely hammered the German defenses. The result was something like 300 casualties on Utah Beach. The B24s were assigned to Omaha Beach, and they flew above the clouds and dropped their bombs without being able to actually see their targets. They didn't hit anything. You know the rest about Omaha Beach.

Many of the beaches were easy to breach as a result of the bombing and the deception of Operation Fortitude

I've also read they tried to do this, but from high altitude with B17's. Clouds made this more inaccurate.
