My guess: surprise and inaccurate bombers
It would take too long and give Germany a chance to bring in reinforcements. Plus bombers in that day couldn't hit the broadside of a barn. Naval bombardment was more effective and they provided 40-100 minutes of naval bombardment

I've also read they tried to do this, but from high altitude with B17's. Clouds made this more inaccurate.
