I think our best offense was surprise.
The Germans knew an invasion was coming but didn’t know where. The Allies succeeded in fooling the Germans to thinking the invasion would come elsewhere which diverted thousands of
Troops.
A huge bombing raid would not have been that effective, and would have tipped them off

I've also read they tried to do this, but from high altitude with B17's. Clouds made this more inaccurate.
