Gate check can mean a couple things.
Sometimes it means your bag is checked normally. But often it means your bag is stored separately and you pick it up right outside the plane, and not at bag claim.
When a plane has tiny overhead storage and your try to bring a bag that normally fits overhead, you usually end up doing the latter.
