A man had made a bet, or something that this ocean liner wouldn’t make a deadline for a transatlantic crossing. When it appears it is going to make it in time, he jumps off in order to make them stop and send something out to get him, and thus not make the deadline. But the person he knows is watching when he jumps thinks it is a joke and just goes to bed. And the ship moves on.
