In America, we focus on fat and calories. NO ONE talks about carbs. Carbs are simply "more complex" sugars.
In August 2021 at my annual physical, my A1C came back at a whopping 11.2, after three years of increasing steadily and my doctor not telling me one thing about it or warning me of the potential consequences. (I found all that increase stuff after looking back at my labs after my diagnosis...) I went to an endocrinologist who point-blank told me that if I wanted to live for more than 5-10 years I needed to change my diet. At the time, I was totally taken aback, as my wife and I eat out maybe once a month, she cooks virtually everything we eat from scratch, and my only real indulgences were M&Ms and Oreos. Heck, I haven't had carbonated beverages since Superbowl Sunday 2007 (Hi, I'm TrueBlue67, I'm a recovering Diet Coke-aholic...). My endocrinologist asked me to describe my diet, which I did. My diet included things that I though were great for me...homemade bread and rolls, pasta, rice, chicken, pork, very little red meat. He told me our #1 problem was all the carbs I was taking in from the grains...of all kinds.
I was put on Metformin and Trulicity and my endocrinologist said to expect that I would be on these medications for the rest of my life. He also told me to drastically cut back on my carb intake...down to 150 carbs a day or less, if possible. I took everything he said to heart.
Now, here I am, 20 months later. I am off of all drugs completely. My A1C is a 5.2 (for those that don't know, a reading of under 6 is considered normal and anything above a 6 is considered diabetic). I lost 55 pounds and now way 165 pounds. I continue to maintain my diet at 150 carbs a day. I haven't felt this good since I was 25...30 years ago.
So, I am just one guy. This is only my experience. But, I believe everything I was told and would recommend to ANYONE who wants to lose weight to cut back on their carbs and balance their diet.
And, just for those of you who might ask, I am super busy with work and HAVE NOT done one extra thing as to exercise. I don't have time at the moment. This has all been done by controlling my diet. Given my own situation, that will be on my 2024 list of new year's resolutions, as I expect a significant increase in time with the coming of the new year.
